Part of the Furniture
Sculptural instalation
Role - Design & digital image manipulation
Produced by Studio BC
Studio BC designed and fabricated this instalation work by artist Maisie Broadhead when invited to take part in the group show ‘Please Sit’ commissioned by the National Trust. 5 designers were invited to create and exhibit seating artworks in response to the 17th century Fenton House National Trust site in Hampstead, London.
The chair is a response to the last occupant of Fenton House, Lady Binning. She was widowed relatively young. Anecdote has it that she became reclusive and wore ‘strange mourning clothes’ long after the death of her husband. An armchair is cloaked with fabric which merges into the carpet of the Drawing Room. The chair becomes fixed or trapped in the room. In a reclusive state one becomes ‘part of the furniture’, intergral to the house.’
